About the artists:
Peter Markgraf (German / Canadian, 1924-2008) was born in Wolfflen / Dessau, Germany. He studied art in Munich and briefly served in the German military before relocating to Canada in 1957 and settling in Hudson, Quebec, in 1962.
Markgraf, along with his wife, Traudl, were renowned for their silkscreen printmaking process. In the 1950s, the Markgrafs and Peter's brother, Hans, were commissioned by the National Gallery of Canada to produce several reproductions of Canadian paintings from their collection, and in 1967 the Canada Council commissioned Peter Markgraf to produce prints of contemporary Canadian art.
In 1977, Peter and Traudl relocated to Vancouver to work for Bill Ellis of Canadian Native Prints Ltd. They later moved to the Sunshine Coast, BC, opening a studio where they produced over 200 serigraphs of how they viewed the Canadian landscape. After 10 years of living in BC, they relocated to the Cayman Islands until the late 1990s, when they returned to Hudson to retire.
